Yoruichi Shihouin (四楓院 夜)

Posted in Anime, Asian Celebrities, Bleach, Cartoon, Female by Administrator on April 15th, 2006.

Yoruichi plays a dark-skinned ex-commander of covert ops in the popular anime Bleach. She can transform into a black cat. She has close relations with Soi Fong and Kisuke Urahara. Often considered the most interesting female character in Bleach, she surprises Ichigo with her body when transforming back from a cat. What follows is a set of screen captures from Bleach, fanart, and photo galleries of this character!

Here she has just transformed from being a cat, scaring Ichigo. It’s strange for a manga girl to lack clothes, but it certainly never crosses the line.

Yoruichi gazes at the blue sky.

  6. the black one says:

actually, she is not dark skinned but in fact black. see episode 116, as yammy refers to her as the “black women”

  7. yreaper says:

nope shes dark skinned even says on wiki and she even is dark skinned do u need glasses jus cos sum arrancar says shes blak dusnt make her blak

  8. blackamon13 says:

Wiki says that she is dark skinned so there wouldn’ t be any to do with racism. But the character was made to be black.

  9. corey says:

i think dat yoruichi is one of the best characters in bleach and she’s the best lookin girl too…………

  10. bleachfanx says:

yoruichi is a black woman..epsiode 116 confirms it…wikipedia is not even a valid source..anyone can write something on wikipedia all they have to do is press the edit tag on the screen..professors in college will tell you wikipedia is one of the worst sources for info available.

  11. Walter Ballard says:

Well regarding Yourichi and race, it really doesn’t matter, but I do love how they draw her without the stereotypes of the “black” race. I wish Japan anime could do this MORE often with both men and women who are dark-skinned. Japan anime should be more diverse instead of having mainly “white-like” Japanese characters…They should add more color to it..

Yourichi is like a prime example of a very good-looking dark-skinned woman. Why not draw a “black” guy in the same way? Use the same face, just simply use perhaps curly, straight, or wavy hair and color the eyes like brown, green, etc?

  12. Bleach Lover says:

I love Yoruichi. She’s soo hot. She’s the best looking girl besides Rukia.

  13. your all isdoits says:

    yourchi is the best morons

  14. mickey8701 says:

I find it so sad that people make such a big deal about yoruichi’s race. She is black and wikipedia can not be used to make a point because wiki can be edited by ANYONE. Racism sucks :(

  15. jimbea,m says:

I dont care wut yoruichi is,just cuz some1 has dark skin dont mean there black,Ive seen people from india that have black-like skin(meaning very dark skin) but of course does that make them black? and anyways black is a color it should be”african” or “african american” and i dont think thats wut yoruichi is,how many so called “black people” have greenish yellowish eyes and purple hair? any yes she is the best looking on bleach, like i said i dont know wut race she is,could be anything besides the obvious. mabe shes just a dark skinned asian, since its anime and takes place in japan, idk, maybe even hispanic? who knows anyways bottom line bleach rules

    • Rai says:

are you retared she black and black people can also have staight hair its, like white people do not want to see a black person in anime, why is that plus i dated a black girl with hazal yollowish eyes, plus yoruichi turns into a “black” cat, and if she was indian she would of had a dot on her forehead, let me ask u why cant she be african american she could be half japanese half african american like Krystal Kay but you dont like hearing that because i think you hate the fact that there african american / blacks in anime lol too bad for you many hot african american girls cosplay as yoruichi more then anybody esle

      • Natalie says:

        @Rai says
        RIGHT ON!!!!!

      • umbrellaboots says:

First of all I think everyone’s makin to much of a big deal about this. It doesn’t matter what race she is. We all know that she’s awsome and that’s all that matters!

AND just cus you’re Indian doesn’t mean you have a dot on your forhead!

    • black chocolate says:

Firstly it really hurts to see that people r willn to fight 4 somethin so trival as dis.se.i honestly believe dat she black it even says so in the bloody anime.im a black person and im from africa and im damn straight not ashamed .yorichi is black, beautiful what dis im hearin bout face features!all u who say dis **** r all bakkas and should suck it.black people can be 1 of the hottest people dere iz just like yorichi sama.u people who such things make it hard to enjoy anime!!i glad deres now racial diversification in anime becuz it makes it more interesting.she cant be indian becuz she has doesnt hav a dot on her head in most anime thats how they potray indians i even have the proof!the frikken arrancer even said so from show that should oviously tell u what race she iz.those who refuse to believe dis r just stuck up RACiSTSSSSS who do like it when a beautiful, amazin, awesome, one of best black characters i ever come across.shout out 2 tai man ur awesome.

    • jack says:

she looks more southern arabic than anything she has their hair and skin tone

  16. cambridgebound says:

It is interesting that some posts seem to have a problem with considering Yoruichi attractive and considering her to be Black (but being anything else with dark skin is OK).
I think she’s Black only by comparing her to other characters in Bleach who are more obviously Black: Captain Tozen (his hair is braided or dreadlocked) is Black and he has the same hair color and skin color as Yoruichi. Don Kanoji also appears to be black having pretty much the same skin color as Yoruichi and Tozen, but different facial features (bigger lips for one).
So I guess if Tozen and Kanoji aren’t Black then Yoruichi isn’t either. But, if you think that these two are Black then it makes sense that she is too.

    • BOB says:

Bwahahaha!(Yeah, the same laugh as Kan’Onji)

The thing is, Don Kan’Onji isn’t “black”. He is, at best, a tanned white guy with african genetics(Which explains the big lips). Tosen is “black”, yes, but he has a much darker skin tone than Yoruichi. If you want an example of a “black” person in Bleach, look for Zommari Leroux. Zommari and Tosen are “black”, Yoruichi isn’t, she is only dark-skinned.

And no, I don’t care what skin color she really is, she could be blue-skinned for all I care, I’m just stating facts so that you stop making mistakes.

      @Rai
The way you wrote your post, it sounded as if it offended YOU that this character wasn’t black. You also sounded racist saying that if she was indian she would NEED to have a “dot” on her forehead.

  17. some filipino chick says:

yoruichi is awesome, and i’ll consider her as filipino haha =P

  18. Yahima says:

Look ok its anime u can do what u want with it make it creative. Why do people always want to make a big fuss when they see something different? Shes f#ing awsome

  19. Kensu says:

Heh, see seems Black to me (mot that t matters because she is so dang hot) and info Wiki is not something you can use to make a fact. The Japanese made manga/anime would not usually contain Black people in it (geez, I thought people got over that), so it’s not really a matter to be mad about. As for me: I really don’t care about skin color. It means nothing in my eyes due to the fact that we are all apart of the human race. Skin color of a human is not a race. Just like some animals have different looks, it’s the same with us. As long as we are human, that’s the only race we all are and forever be. ;]

  20. Marsia says:

Yes, Yoruichi is dark skinned but is considered black comparing to her asian counterparts in the anime. Does it really matter if shes black or not? As long as shes hot and kicks butt? Thats all I really have to say. But from my own view, yes just like everyone else has their own. I believe shes a black woman hands down. Yammi already stated she was a black woman hence probably this was the writers trying to indicate she was a black woman to the confused masses. Who knows? Not me! But I have my own opinion and I stick to it!~

  21. TheBeast says:

If you follow the anime series, she is refered to as the “Black Woman.” Secondly, this is an ANIME you weeaboos. No one, not even Asian nor White people hava natural Purple hair or Cat Yellow eyes. Christ, so to even bring up the argument that because she has Purple hair and Yellow eyes cancels out the fact that she is not black is retardation. Now, reguarding Wikia – anyone can edit that damn site, and dark-skinned is another form of saying “Black” instead of calling someone a “Black Chick.” or “African-American.” – wake the hell up and stop being ignorant.

  22. Chimera says:

Beast, I agree .She’s a Black Anime Character, one of few; take Caska from Berserk for example. Japanese artist are starting to expand and open up culturally. Before, dark-skinned characters were depicted as ****** or characteristically featured with afros, large lips and virtually played no major role in Anime’s. I can speak from experience, I’m a Black-Japanese: Japanese Father and Black Mother and I’ve spent a lot of time in Japan to know first hand the culture turn-a-round in the last couple of years. Though, a lot of the Older Japanese are more close-minded, the newer generation are more open to other cultures. Personally, I think, I’d make an awesome Yoruichi. xD Lulz.

  23. Kensu says:

TheBeast & Chimera: You guys have put up some really good and very smart points.

  24. Kitterz says:

i actually find little to no black/african features about Yoruichi other than she’s got dark skin. if you look at what the japanese consider dark skin it’s actually a lot lighter than most people would normally think. just like how for SOME reason black people have brown skin, brown people have tan skin, and yellow people… well we know they’re not yellow xD
like if you wanna get technical about her race then it’s probably safer to say that she’s mixed with southwest (like SOUTH) and east asian.
cuz think about it. if you’re japanese and you live in japan and MOST of what you see are japanese people, your perception of what’s ‘dark’ is waaaay different than someone else that’s lived in a multi cultural environment where a mexican family, an african family, and an asian family all live on the same block ^^
yoruichi just looks like a cat when you get down to it :3
yoruichi’s not black. she’s just a tanned asian person

    • Rai says:

what????black/african features???? go google Yoruichi cosplay there are many blacks thats looks just like Yoruichi plus asian can’t get that tanned ,u racist *** hole, have you ever seen Tira banks she or holly Berry would be the best Yoruichi

  25. Kitterz says:

and also dark skinned doesn’t mean that you’re solely of african ^^

i’m dark skinned and my friend’s dark skinned too.
    i’m indian and she’s thai so yeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaah…

but yeah who cares what yoruichi is. she kicks *** xD

  26. mimi says:

okay so she has brown skin…why are you people trying to figure out if she’s black or not? So what if she is? She’s awesome and she kickass. Skin color shouldn’t mean ****.

  27. dude says:

black people don’t have straight hair, i live in an area filled with asians in canada and they consider anyone who has a darker skin tone than them as black!

  28. lawlball says:

She is Black, to color, meaning, exactly the frick’n same as dark skinned.
I don’t think race has anything to do with the anime or manga, since Ichigo could very well be polish as he could be japanese, geez.

  29. A. says:

    You guys suck.

The only people that make a big deal of Yoruichi being black are Americans who don’t think that anything black can possibly equal beautiful.

For the record, YES, Yoruichi is actually black. She is not an tanned Asian. (Setsuna from Sailor Moon or Urd From Ah, My Goddess are tanned Asians), she is straight-up black. Tanned Asians are not that dark. Also, consider Anthy Himemiya from Utena, who, BTW, had a Bindi on the top of her head. She was Indian.

With that said, a lot of you need to brush up on your information about black people. While the majority of black people have much stronger features and coarser hair, it doesn’t mean that they all do. There are people who are black that have smaller features and straighter hair, and are not necessarily bi-racial either.

Don’t make blanket statements when you have no clue what you’re talking about.

  30. A. says:

Also, a lot of you fail to consider Blasians. (Black and Asian Mix)

Blasians have fine features, generally straight hair and tend to be anywhere from light-skinned to roughly Yoruichi’s complexion. Examples of this are singers Crystal Kay and Amerie and clothing Designer Kimora Lee Simmons.

  31. anno says:

Why do they even put that she’s dark skinned? You can see that she’s dark skinned, I can see that’s she’s dark skinned so why even put it in there?

Dark skinned or not Yoruichi is an awesome character.

  32. Shihouin Fan says:

First of all, we can all agree that Yorouichi is : 1. Fine and exotic, and probably the most mature character (exhibitionist). 2. dark-skinned. 3. has a Japanese name, but so does Capt. Tousen.
    4. not have the stereotypical image of a black woman.
    5. Ain’t it so cool to have Yoruichi so popular that people are trying to claim her like Elian Gonzalez?
    6. Why don’t we e-mail Tite Kubo (the creator) and/or his animator counterparts? Nit-picking without going trying to go to the source only leaves it to subjective arguments on each person’s judgement.

Let’s rule out facial features. Anime tricks the eyes in how expressive the character emotions are compared to Western 2d animation.
Let’s consider her this, not pure Japanese in any case; she could very well be Black, true Indian (of the Eurasian continent), Southeast Asian, Hawaiin, or Hispanic. Actresses who could represent her: Tiffany Good, Mallika Sherawat, Vannessa Minnillo the list goes on.

    • Rai says:

racist ***** ” stereotypical image of a black woman” are you kidding me what is that mean have you seen Crystal Kay and Amerie???

  33. cubed says:

WHAT THE HELL IS THE TYPICAL BLACK WOMAN LOOK!!! i just would like to know!!!

it pisses me off that people would say something like that.

yoruichi is beautiful, so she couldn’t be black?

aaliyah, beyonce, nia long, sanaa lathan, lauren london, myself EVEN, could be yoruichi!! so what are you talking about?

i am sick to death with these typical black features **** because there are none! ya ********

    • Nyny says:

I agree.Race cannot always be determined by “black” features.. I’m mostly black and I have small lips so does my dad.. And my mom has a straight nose. So there’s really no telling.. And yes she could be black.. No one on real life has ever been born with purple hair so her race could not possibly be based off of that.

  34. someone says:

DOES IT MATTER! It would be nice having a black anime character lol we wouldnt stick out that much at anime conventions if there were a nice amount to choose from lol. But I consider her black..you can consider her whatever you want but I consider her black and anyone can consider her anything they would like. That is probably why the person put “dark-skinned” They didnt want to put a particular race. But it wouldnt hurt for you guys to watch epiosde 116 :/

  35. kuro burakku says:

What’s up with A. complaining about people making “blanket statements when you have no clue what you’re talking about” but making generalizations like “Tanned Asians are not that dark”?

South and Southeast Asians that are as dark or darker than Yoruichi are pretty common. I’ve known Filipinos as dark as Yoruichi as well as many Thais and Indians who are the same shade or darker.

Bleach isn’t exactly striving for realism with racial traits. Ichigo and Orihime with orange hair? Yuzu with light brown hair? Soul Reapers/Shinigami aren’t even human, but if they’re supposed to look like it, no human has naturally pink or purple hair. I hadn’t really thought of Yoruichi as being any particular race, but I went and watched ep 116. The phrase in Japanese is “kuroi onna,” literally “black woman,” but I only know a little basic Japanese so I can’t tell whether the intended meaning is “black woman” or “dark woman.” I’ve seen the English loan word “burakku” (“black”) used to describe people of African descent before. I have no idea if “kuroi” is often used similarly or if either word also applies to anyone with dark skin.

    On usage of “kuro(i)”:
I do know of the word “ganguro” (face-black) (-guro = kuro “black”) that describes a rebellious Japanese fashion style with very tan skin and bleached blonde or brown hair (and sometimes blue contacts, flower leis, etc) that reportedly variously emulates tanned California bleached blondes, or blacks and hip hop culture, or the tanned Okinawan singer Amuro Namie.

So…I still can’t tell what Yoruichi is supposed to be. But I guess I don’t really care.

  36. Cicely says:

I think both Yourichi and Mila Rose who shows up in Bleach a little later(espada) are hot chicks. I’m working on a fan art now with both of them in it. When I finish I’m gonna post it but they are really **** black women. I find it thrilling to see minorities represented in Anime no matter what they are. I can’t wait to cos play as one. You know my husband thinks I’m an absolute nerd for even watching “cartoons” as he calls them at my age. Anime is awesome and I’m glad they are trying to pull in all audiences. I’ve gone from being the only black woman at work watching anime to one of 5 who have begun to love it.

  37. A. says:

I’m actually referring to in Anime, kuro. I should have specified.

Tanned Asian Anime characters (such as Setsuna from Sailormoon), are generally not as dark as Yoruichi is. It is rare to find an anime character that is merely tanned, that is as dark as Yoruichi is.

Yoruichi also has the same skintone as Kaname Tousen, and it has been actually been stated that Tousen IS black.

  38. I STRONGLY agree with TheBeast, Chimera, and “A”. It seems alot of people are fighting even the possibility that she is of african descent (Black) And from a Bi-racial (I’m black and cuban and a few other things way back…lol) it is hurtful for someone to straightout attack the concept of her being black (Think with empathy people). listening to the statements about why she can’t be black is very nearly insulting at times. I agree that there are other possibilities, however from my own perspective she is just as black as Tousen (Who also has a Japanese name)…there is also relatively high likelihood she is mixed, but listening to the way these people describe how she can’t be black cause of her hair, her eyes, her facial characteristics (Which are common among the anime style…here’s an idea …watch the Boondocks by Aaron Mcgrudder! Look at his style…He’s black too) I don’t wanna resort to the “One-drop” rule… lol…I digress but this type of thing gets to me. I fiercely love and enjoy a lot of anime and it’s character and the japanese culture itself. It’s a shame so many people out there are so set in their ways to believe she is black when it’s even mentioned in the show. I guess you can’t make people see what they don’t want to believe. Also for people who don’t care or think I’m being too racial about this, I only wish I could convey to you what this kind of thing means and sounds like from a “Black” perspective, and If you don’t care, then why are you commenting? So yea, I just had to get that off my chest…I ‘ve been doing my research and I have a general Idea how few black people (and people of any other races) live in Japan. But look at Chad and Tousen and tell me that it’s impossible she’s “Black”. I know how silly it may sound from an outside perspective, but I mean and stand by what I say. And if by some turn of fate I end up being wrong I appologize…but someone needs to say this regardless! Thank you for your time and consideration. I’ll refrain from any further long posts or rants here on out.

  39. TruthSerum says:

If Yourichi or Tousen were black they would have African-American or African names. He didn’t draw them with an ethnicity in mind. They’re not black or African, they’re asian. Nobody draws character to look a specific race…white people are the only anime fans who think anime are drawn to look like whites. If they were white or some sort of foreigner, they usually emphasize that. You white people are full of nonsense and ignorance. If you want to play it that way then I’m gonna go ahead and say Clark Kent is asian because he has black eyes and black hair in the cartoon. You guys are ******* dumb as rocks.

  40. punisher says:

A lot of you guys are just lying to yourself Yammy even said she was black!
Watch ep 116 5:28 and hear it from the horse’s mouth! Some of you guys are willing to believe in flying pigs before accepting that for once a black person was showcased in good light in anime.

“If Yourichi or Tousen were black they would have African-American or African names. “…… this comment was kind of illogical. When last have you ever seen an anime where the characters have anything other than japanese names? It may exsist but its rare. Obviously race is represented in anime! For example Naruto UZUMAKI (

  41. punisher says:

(whose name is japanese) has blonde hair and blue eyes. The truth is that up until recent years, anime only portrayed Caucasians and Asians. But times change. Yoruichi is black guys. Just accept it

  42. You tell ‘em Punisher!

  43. SnoDawg says:

What Are you talking about Punisher… Never in episode 116 does She talk Let alone APPEAR. did you mean 115? because she was actually in that episode.

  44. Ebs says:

Tai, I loved/agreed with everything you had to say, so post as much as you want. I am afro-american and also found myself baffled and almost hurt as to why people would flat out refuse to even consider that Yoruichi could possibly be of African descent.

“If Yourichi or Tousen were black they would have African-American or African names.”
Care to give us some examples of african american names? My cousin’s name is Sara Pierce, and she is as black as… well, me. As for myself, my name is of Dutch origin!

SnoDawg, if you refer to episode 116 and you will see what the punisher is talking about. I think he was referring to Yammy’s lines.

  45. punisher says:

SnoDawg i mean how yammy called her a black woman in episode 116. The editors put that in there to clear up the drama on what yoruichi is

  46. BJS says:

all u people that say that youroichi isnt black r just mad that theres FINALLY a good loking *** kicking black women in an anime i agree with punisher/ebs/tai/a/cicely and all the rest that have some damned common sense dark skinned = black in anime c it any where u guys r saying some **** thats down right racist”black people dont have straight hair” i can garantee a black person didnt say that so u dont know what the hell your talking about

  47. someguy says:

    She’s from the “outer region”
    =D

And to that guy that said “its not black is African American”: in that case you’d best call me European American because white is a color as well is not not?

    gg@you

anyhow. yoruichi is a black woman.
you’re pretty retarded if you think otherwise.
    shes attractive, and bad-*******-***.
    get over it

  48. Elaine Johnson says:

Omg Yoruichi is like my idol shes smart **** funny and she KICKS MAJOR ***!!! I love the fact that shes so confident and comfertable in
her own skin. She is my favorite character out of Bleach. Im glad that theres an anime out there that has a strong smart **** black women
and thats a main character. And to all the people out there that say
shes not black, your blind and close minded. If there were more different types
of races in anime insted of all the white looking Japanese characters
anime would be ten times better 4 everyone.

    Yoruichi Fan 4ever,
    Elaine

  49. SnoDawg says:

Punisher Was Right! im Sorrie Homie… Alright everyone Check This Out… On Bleach Episode 116 Yammy, One of the Menos Was consoled About his failure With his Fight with Ichigo… and he Said: “Werent you watching? we were ambushed By that guy in the sandals and That Black Woman” AHA!! He said it! and Thats How i will accept it.. And Based With what BJS said… When there is Finally an Awesome Black Anime Girl For some reason No one wants her to be black… Why not? Something wrong? i mean i cant believe i doubted her… she is CLEARLY black… i mean there is no other explaination for her pigment to be so damn dark i mean she is darker than Kaolla Su! Anyway… for any of you who have doubt… just Go here… this should clear it up… he says it at 5:28 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_5Sljbo36S4 Da Names SnoDawg… and ill be Back.

  50. Nyx says:

what is wrong with her being black?
you people are just being racist. Can’t
consider anything black beautiful? I know
tons of hot black girls AND guys irl. so you
should all stfu. except for some of you that
actually MADE sense, like A, and Tai etc.

  51. Anonymous says:

You know why can’t we just quite this debate on Yoruichi’s ethinicity and keep it to ourselves our opinion of whatever her race is.

I want to contradict both the opposition

For those who claim she is dark-skinned from wikipedia, it’s true that wiki isn’t trustworthy. therefore we cannot assume she is dark-skinned.

For those who rely on that Arrancar’s description, you also can’t assume he really meant black women as literally Black

Everybody’s entitled to thier own opinnions but It’s getting ridiculous, leave comments that praise Yoruichi and stop the racial debates.

Remember; Never assume, it makes an *** out of U and ME

  52. Anonymous says:

oh and if your so desperate to know her ethinicity then stop bickering and debating and contact Tite Kubo

  53. Amanda says:

Yoruichi is the best female on Bleach she rocks! I think she’s Black, but why is there so much debate about this I mean the real debate should be on what Ichigo and the rest are, b/c I’m confused some say they are Asian and some say they are white, they do look white soooooooooooo….

  54. SnoDawg says:

BTW What TruthSerum Said is offensive. Not every African person you meet wont have a African, African-American Name. Though point taken, My name Is VERY African, but I actually know a black guy named Patrick, Eric, Peter, And Even James. So for you to say “If She Was Black She Would Have a African or African-American Name.” is Bigotry. (Opinion)

    SnoDawg.

She is HOT! I love episode 41!

  58. narutard03 says:

whoops srry about the multiple comments. i only meant to post once

  59. Moonscar says:

I really don’t see the problem with her being black. I guess to some people being black means your ugly? Please there are tons of gorgeous people of the black race. I mean many people today are in fact racist and don’t want her to be black even though she probably is. In fact on youtube I got 2 negative rating on my comment because I mentioned that Yoruichi is black. Really sad how ignorant some people can be.

Anyways I really want to see her swords power.

  67. Opi says:

Why are you guys arguing that Yoruichi isn’t black? Is it a crime to be black? She is obviously black! Don’t you have eyes? SHE IS BLACK! Grow up!

    • Me says:

      THANK YOU!!!!

And as for the person that said that rubbish about her having purple hair and green eyes so she can’t possibly be black it’s an anime it does not portray real life plus ever watched lucky star? That anato what ever shes called has blue hair and the twins have purple hair also that clever one has pink hair but how many real japanese people do you see with natural hair that colour?

P.s NOT ALL BLACK PEOPLE ARE FROM AFRICA. EVER HEARD OF THE CARRIBEAN????? -_-

  68. crimson says:

I think everyone’s getting juust a little too personal and emotional here. Factually speaking, every non American race that i know of, calls darker people “black”. This rules out the theory that she is definite 100% African. While someone like Captain Tousen can be identified as having somewhat African descent, with Yoruichi it would be very hard to say that (just being honest). So while its not about African people not being good looking (who in the world said that ever)..Yoruichi in my honest opinion is most likely South Asian (Indian etc) becasue the skin tone and features are quite different (mainly darker) than Dark asians. Thanks.

    • Rai says:

why ive seen alot black girl that looks just like her , not lndians, and what do you mean by ” does NOT seem so” what are you tring to say, racist people like u hate that fact, why do u hate african black being in anime so much, i remeber some white person was saying that afro samurai and Bobobo wasnt african american, what is up with u guys man it doesnt make any sence, she not indian she doesnt have a dot plus indian are not that dark japanese people are more likely to put a white or a black person in anime because they view blacks and whites as americans so i heard of a black ninja but an indian ninja??? dude i think your full of it

      • YouruichiROcks:3 says:

I think you’re too damn ******* RACIST!!! You’re getting way tooo personal about this…Plus everyone is entitled to their own opinion. If someone thinks she’s asian and you think she’s black…..THEN LEAVE IT AT THAT!!!! But if you wanna get all racist about it you can go **** yourself and suck ****!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

      • YouruichiROcks:3 says:

I think you’re getting too damn ******* RACIST!!! Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. 69. crimson says:

Or better yet..she doesnt HAVE to be a race anyway..its just definitely not mentioned anywhere that she’s african..and jsut looking at her it does NOT seem so.

  70. Yoyo says:

    She’s black.

  71. bread says:

i thought dark skin make her look fitter…

  73. Muffin says:

What I don’t like is that she doesn’t look black, I mean wtf? They can’t draw african facial features?

  74. Humble Cat says:

She’s black damnit…lol get over it. and fights like a sista too…hand to hand lmao beating ***. Plus Yama called her a black woman…so move on

  75. Marissa J. says:

Yoruichi isn’t black. No one in the soul society can be considered anything. The only people we know for sure of are Ichigo, Uryu, Orihime, and Chad. Since they are all from Japan. Just because she has dark skin doesn’t make her black or any other race for that matter. She is just Yoruichi a kick *** fighter. Why do people always have to associate a race to anime characters.

    • Moonscar says:

Fail. Chad isn’t originally from Japan. He’s Mexican with some Japanese in him. Also Tousen is black without a doubt. Showing that race is represented in this anime. Though I don’t see why her being black makes people so outraged. It’s just this worlds typical thinking that her being black would make her less cool. People need to grow up…

  76. Mcprettypants says:

I love Yoruichi, she’s one of my favorite anime characters besides Sesshomaru from Inuyasha. She’s the prettiest female in Bleach and she kicks a$$. All of you haters should stop hating…she’s BLACK….GET OVER IT!!!

  77. Dee says:

she is so black.. so she has purple hair and greenish eyes. what about other anime characters that have pink, blue, red, silver, orenge, green hair what does that make them?

  78. Tai Tian Long says:

Hey there everyone, I’m back on this page after like 2YEARS! Its Ironic cause I came here looking for more info on her and her family’s crest (I bought the necklace). I was last on here April 17th 2008 ironically around the same time lol!!! I’m glad 2 c I wasnt the only one feeling very nearly insulted and who voiced how they felt. I want to especially applaud (even tho they may never c this again) the following ppl: Ebs, Nyx (thank you both), and Moonscar (who actually touched on a point I had noticed but didnt mention. Not to mention the other numerous ppl who spoke out RESPECTFULLY (as possible). Its crazy how this turned into a mini-movement type thing lol, but while it breeds conflict, its good that more ppl are seeing it and understanding how their comments on something seemingly so little, can breed great debates and/or hurt ppl emotionally et cetera. That is also why ppl should think about the words they use and associations they make (being considerate and respectful of eachother and their cultural differences.) From what I heard Kubo said something along the lines that she was brazilian (which is still a stretch cause brazil has a lot of different cultures mixed together including numerous “black” ppl or of “black” decent due to the slave ports et cetera that were there during the slave trade.) I’m actually happy 2 be finding actual “black” (raikage, killerbee,…) and “white” (Yugito Nii…) characters in the Naruto universe more frequently (I applaud them for that…despite any sterotypes they may be playing 2) The world is becoming increasingly diverse and what I felt was important back then was that ppl not cast out the window the very possibility so easily ( and yes I still 2 this day and probably 4 always will consider her “Black” in the conventional sense). We all gotta still at least attempt 2 remain respectful tho, even if we feel insulted. We are all fans no matter the characters backgrounds (we are likely all 4rm different backgrounds and socioeconomic statuses ourselves) and we should come together to celebrate that, and the emerging diversity within anime/manga as of late and hopefully the storylines et cetera. I appologize now, I’m not trying 2 reignite the debate, but foster understanding and compassion/empathy. We may all believe what we believe (we r entitled 2 that) @ the same time that has little impact on what things r much of the time: for example: a rose is a rose no matter the character. You may have a favorite kind or color, but in the end they are all roses. Yoruichi is a beautiful and strong female who is dark skinned (my POV= Black by conventional standards) enough to suggest a likelihood of being “black” (which is something people within that part of my culture find inspiring and uplifting all the more in a medium which they enjoy despite knowing they’re going to be under-represented in for however long. That’s my point of reference on that. And that is the end of my input on that subject. I 2 would now like to begin inquiries about what her sword looks like, what it does, her family/history, and so on (and speculation is fun and something we can all enjoy more or less respectfully). I do hope its 2nd release is cooler than Soi-fon cuz her Bazooka is kinda a random choice..4 her sake I hope they start attaining 3rd releases n so on n the not 2 distant future. I also kinda wonder about the nobel families and why they’re so “nobel” etc. I came here looking for more info on the family crest lol,( ironically I’d been on here b4 2 yrs ago lol.) hopefully the conversation and “debates” take a turn 4 the better and that we all can and have learned from this. And that is the end of my rants for prolly another year at least lol. Thank ppl who supported me 2 yrs ago lol :P

  79. Tai Tian Long says:

lol, one more silly quote “It may not mean nothing to yall…but understand nothin was done 4 me…So I dont plan on stoppin @ all…I want (anime) 4eva, 4EVA mayne…” lol

  80. GetItRight says:

Yoruichi is black (African) Creators and an episode confirms this. I mean, its pretty obvious, whats wrong with having ppl of African Decent in Anime? Gee, racists…

About the features, what the hell is Sakura Haruno? I doubt real asians have pink hair and green eyes.

  81. Afreakinqueen says:

I actually stumbled across this page trying to look up web results on what happened to Yoruichi. Haven’t seen her in quite some time, and season 8 will be starting shortly (in America).

Anyway, since we’re on the subject, I’ve always viewed Yoruichi as Black. She transforms into a black cat, and she is refered to as black on several occasions. I too saw the wiki page where she was refered to as “dark-skinned.” “Dark-skinned” does not mean “not Black.” There are dark and light skinned people in every race. Besides, she was refered to as dark skinned on wiki in order to avoid conflict like this.

I think it’s great that there is representation of different races in Bleach. If you’re up to date on the show, then you know that Chad is Latino. As a Black woman who enjoys anime and loves Japanese culture, I find it sad that when an anime does have diversity among its characters, people try to dispute and dismiss it.

It just upsetting that some people can’t imagine her being Black because she is attractive/cool/etc (because that IS what it boils down to). Basically, she doesn’t fit any stereotype (physical or personal) of a Black woman, and that’s why so many of you can’t imagine her being Black. The fact is that nobody, regardless of race, is born with purple hair and yellow eyes, not all Black people have large facial features, and you can’t analyze any of her physical features in order to classify her race because most of the characters are drawn with similar physical traits. Even Tousen’s facial features are similar to the other characters. There are very few with features that stand out.

I feel the need to address a previously made comment, even though it’s a little off subject. The comment was, “…and anyways Black is a color it should be African or African American.” Black refers to race, just as White does. Not all Black people are either African or African American. Do you honestly believe that the only places Black people exist are in Africa or America? Do you refer to every White person you meet as either European or European American? See how ridiculous that sounds when you flip it around? Race is used to group together people of similar physical traits, and is loosely based on origin.

Forgive me for ranting (_ _)

Anyway, let’s remember that this is just an anime. If it were real you could send her a text and ask her yourself, but she’s just a character. If it bothers you that much contact the creator.

Back to my reason for coming here…what has happened with Yoruichi? If I could just know the last episode she was in, that would be helpful. I was wondering because I just watched the first Bleach movie, and noticed she wasn’t in it. Hopefully she’s in season 8, and I mean more than just a 1 episode cameo appearance.

    • Oni says:

Have you even seen the bount arc, arrancar saga, or the zanpakuto arc, she appears in all three. If you have more questions I would be happy to answer.

  82. Oni says:

Well I agree with the lot of you that doesn’t matter what race is in an anime but there have been a few animes with black people bleach for one (tousen) and lets not forget tenjo tenge (bob makihara). I don’t know if yoroichi is black, asian, indian, etc. she could be a mix of two races who knows and who care God just be happy that they have a unique character in bleach. Drop all this racist bullshit and nonsense.

  83. Anigirl says:

I have one thing to say….stop making such a big deal over whether or not Yoruichi is Black. I agree that she could be any other dark-skinned race, but consider the charateristics of those races as well. Take a good look at her then at other real women of different dark-skinned races.
Just stop acting so damn ignorant, all right? She might just be Blasian (this is a real word and the correct term for African-Japanese people) but you are too stupid to consider that.

Yoruichi Shihouin is one of THE BEST Bleach females of all times, no one can compare to her. Please show her the respect that she would you if she was a real woman.

  84. daryl says:

t une vrai bomb et tu na pa peur de rien jaime sa et t tro ****

  85. yourmom says:

There’s a prime difference between skin color and ethnicity. She could be hispanic and still be black. She could be Japanese, born and raised, and still be black. Hell, if we want to take it as far as saying that she could be Jewish and still be black, then it would be valid. I even remember reading that the only reason of why Yoruichi’s hair was purple instead of black in the anime was to avoid her hair from blending into her outfit.

In my opinion, she’s black. Even if you would go down the “she could be South Asian, Indian, or Blasian” road, she would end up being called black regardless. She would just be the African-”Insert Ethnicity Here” in whatever country she was in when it pertains to race. Saying she’s not black is like saying Tyson Beckford, Amarie, and Tiger Woods (as some examples) are not black. It would be simply shocking.

  86. Xunja says:

*Gag! Cough, cough!* Oh god! *cough!* Ah…popcorn…I was choking…Please continue.

  87. white person says:

Yoruichi shihouin is not black race because she looks like she is thai or south indian or hispanic. Also, she doesn’t have dreadlocks or big lips or dark black skin just like a black person. What Yammy referred to her was false because Yammy is considered color blind.

  88. >w says:

She seems to be Indian, as in from India. She has dark skin plus straight hair, like a South Asian or South East Asian. Also always sitting cross legged lol. There is a lot of Indian mythology references in Japan, so it wouldn’t be suprising.

  89. perv sage says:

    YOUROUCHI IS HOT!

  90. Michelle says:

I bet its only a few racist whites that think she is not black, white people think they own everything. Anyway I think it’s good that they have a well represent BLACK character on this anime! I love anime and it’s nice to see a black character

  91. Michelle says:

    *represented

  92. HyunJin KIm says:

i will dissapoint all the haters but its proven that she is black women who is mixed with asian.
She is not thai or indian, if sh was they would of put a doton her forhead like they do most of the time.In the new japan generation we accept more culture and enter them in anime like naruto bleach final fantasy just because they dont have big lips doesnt mean anything.Bondocks riley and huey dont have big lips, Storm doesnt have big lips one street fighter character Elena (エレナ) has white hair and blue eyes but guess what SHE IS KENYAN AFRICAN btw an asian man dreww her pawnneedddto all haters :D

  93. smarty says:

R u retarded people. She is from the soul society. Who the heck said that it is made up of japanese people. Ever thought that it contains people from europe america asia or australia and south america. She can be black. You don’t know her history. She can be anything. And another thing chad is mexican or spanish. There is nothing wrong with having different races. All people in the soul society should not be called white black asain spanish because they have the common skin color of the. Corresponding race. Take note to reas the bio of the characters. Chad is definitely spanish/mexican

  94. Locust says:

R u retarded. There r many “black” people in anime/manga/games. Take sahz katzroy from final fantasy 13. No one says he’s black. But he is for numerous reasons which I must admit: his son has a afro (a pretty big one), his theme is jazz (lol) and he has an up side down triangle afro. I’ve seen numerous japaneses things that contain blacks. Stop being racist and ignorant. Also there is rarely a caucasian person in anime. Like deathnote: there was an “american” named ray penber in japan for an investigation. As far as I’m conserned there is no caucasian in bleach.

  95. Locust says:

And I have to admit is pissses me off when white people think that people in anime r white. I read a forum about a jacka55 saying that pokemon takes place in europe. First pokemon takes place in an archipelago (a chain of islands) and japan is an archipelago. Point is that people should stop thinking that anime always contain their race. Anyway yoroichi is from the soul society not from japan. I’m pretty sure she can go to america just as easily.

  96. (>'')> Ghost says:

    She is awesome,hot,and cool

  97. tabetha2010 says:

Come on you guys its says in the anime that she’s black, my goodness can we give it a rest already, and for you people who refuse to accept that, she’s still gonna be identified as a black character. Trust me if you guys know about cosplayers there are alot of black women/girls who cosplay her being that she’s one a the few bad-*** & good looking BLACK characters of an anime.

  98. werebeast says:

Yoruichy is the hotest!!!!!!And the most best bleach character.

  99. omg u ppl says:

does she have big fat lips? no
does she have cornrows or vine hair, again no

does she speak japanese? yes. very very very few black ppl that can speak japanese that fluently
does she wear japanese traditional clothing? yes, black ppl wouldnt dare be caught in that with their ppl around

does she know martial arts? yes, very very few black men know any martial arts except for boxing, and black women? even less know martial arts than their male counterparts, it’s always a gun, knife and a group

black men and women are characteristic for their fat lips, asians can have dark skin to that extent too what would a bunch of black ppl know about that when they hardly interact with asians, i have yet to find any asian or white with fat lips like a black, if she has fat lips that consider yoruichi black with no argument but until than she is an asian

so wut if yammy said the black woman? yammy himself has as dark skin as her yet for him to refer yoruichi a black woman means he’s merely calling her a dark skinned woman, the japanese such as tite kubo does not understand how the “black” word means a very important demographical race of african americans in america he could of called her a chocolate bunny for all we care

and dont call me a racist u black ppl, just love the way your lips, hair and skin is like stop hating on your own race peace

    • Miz says:

Lol I like how you stereotyped EVERYTHING you said. Just because they have a certain feature doesn’t define what race they are.

Now watch me punch holes in your argument.

I know a ton of black chicks with thin lips, straight hair, and light skin. They are still black. but they don’t fit the stereotypical description.

Oh. I actually have a crush on a chick who looks just like Yoruichi and she wear traditional Japanese clothing at times. However, not so fluent in Japanese as far as I know of.

They can love their race and culture, but why can’t they love another’s culture as well? Can’t have best of both worlds? I believe otherwise.

  100. ????? says:

Lol I agree with everyone about how it doesn’t matter. It’s an anime character…..not a real life person that is actually worth arguing about. She is perfectly created and has great looks I will emphasize the CREATED part so that the normal person realizes they are arguing over a drawing put into a Japanese cartoon show.

  101. GetOverIt says:

I don’t know what you guys are talking about,Yoruichi is CLEARLY WHITE! like all because she has dark skin doesn’t mean she ‘dark Japanese??? wtf LOL, ‘dark skinned’ and clearly you are saying she Indian or middle eastern (WHICH WILL NEVER BE THE CASE EVER!) or black, (which in any case is most likely what she is) but when it all comes down to it Yoruichi is a white woman who spent to much time in the sun and you’re all wrong, EVEN THOUGH IN EPISODE 116 CLEARLY SAY SHE BLACK! ( and I think the maker of the anime made that race reference CLEARLY ON PURPOSE), she totally a white woman that super awesome with very defined ‘Black’ features. And seriously man a few of you guys clearly haven’t seen a lot of black people cause like you don’t need big lips to be considered black, or overly ‘black’ features :P . But in conclusion, Yoruichi is the whites chick I know.:P ….And did I say I totally want to be here Soi Fon ^.~

  102. Checkityourself says:

It says on Bleach Wiki that shes Black….just sayin.

  103. harribel says:

how did the conversation go to what skin tone/ race she is? odd

  104. wtfurfightinbout says:

i dont know what your guys fighting about but it doesnt really matter if she is dark skinned or black skinned, who cares its just da some..duhh fightin like babies.. doesnt prove you smarter, lets just talk about her character or something else, this whole page is about a fight of she’s black skin or dark skin and i heard somebody wrote she is white skinned??? are you colour blind or what? btw, rukia nvr been the coolest character..face it she’s just annoying yoruichi is the best…<3

  105. GOD Yoruichi is SOOOOOOOOO F***ING HOT!!!!!!!!!

    I wish i could Marry her **** *** MMMMMM MMM!!!!!!!!! <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3!!!!!!!!!!

  106. ddddddd says:

shut up. she’s black. its obvious. “indian”? Get real. You know who is “indian”? Uub from DBZ. Or even Scar from FMA. Those were characters portrayed to have middle eastern backgrounds. Yoruichi is black. Compare her skin to a black persons. They even say she’s black in the anime. Lol you all are retarded.

  107. Ghop says:

You guys are so freaking retarded. I’m black and you can easily tell that she’s black too. And some of you act like it’s illegal to have a black person in anime. Like so many other ppl have said, they even say she’s black in the manga and anime but u racist ppl still call her dark-skinned for some freaking reason. I feel sorry for some of you lol

  108. Serena says:

Woah…I can’t believe I read all of these comments. I’m baffled though. Some of you are all STRUGGLING to find the most OBSCURE combinations of ethnicities for Yoruichi to avoid saying the OBVIOUS answer. She is black (“Naw guys, she is actually an Asian that fell into a chocolate factory..”)See how ridiculous that sounds? It seems that the majority of you have avoided such irrational conclusions and went with the most logical answer though, which makes me sigh in relief. Is that a crime to be black? No! Ultimately, you can believe whatever the hell you want but if you want the facts…then Yoruichi is black. (Fun Fact: Tousen is not only a Japanese name but a very common Nigerian one.)

  109. @Rai:
i think you’re getting wayy too ******* personal!!!Plus everyone is entitled to their own opinion. if someone wants to think she’s asian and you want to think she’s black…. than just LEAVE IT AT THAT!!! don’t get all RACIST about it!!! and if you are gonna get all racist about it then you can go **** yourself and suck ****!!!!!!!!

  110. kai23 says:

She is black… Just look at Tyra Banks for example…
